About the Purple Ribbon
For more than 30 years a number of sources have been credited with originating the use of purple ribbon as a unifying symbol of courage, empowerment, survival, honor and dedication to ending domestic abuse. Across the country families and friends of victims have adopted the purple ribbon to remember and honor their loved ones who have lost their lives at the hands of a person they once loved and trusted. Purple Ribbon Council's vision is to build on this longstanding level of awareness by conveying the message that together, we can end this social disease by preventing it BEFORE it starts and interrupting the cycle BEFORE it is too late.
WHY WE CHOSE MAY AS OUR NATIONAL "Go Purple" AWARENESS MONTH
For decades, October has been recognized as "National Domestic Violence Awareness Month," quietly raising mass awareness in the shadows of the very visible "pink" breast cancer awareness campaigns. To support (not dilute) the importance of October as the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Purple Ribbon Council has chosen the month of MAY as our national "GO PURPLE" awareness month. By mobilizing everyday people to help heighten public consciousness for prevention in the month of May, we reduce the possibility of competing for funds and cause market share in October with the critically needed "pink ribbon" campaigns.
Each of our branded "Go Purple" campaigns, kick off publicity
efforts in the month of MAY. We collaborate with salon and spa professionals,
fitness enthusiasts, golf club managers, restaurant owners, retailers,
survivors and community members to help Break the Silence, Break the
Cycle and save Lives™.
