This "Blooming v. Wilting Flower," created by Purple Ribbon Council Founder Donna Bartos and graphic designer Brian Richardson, represents the solution to ending domestic abuse: preventing root causes and nurturing the roots of healthy relationships.
The BLOOMING FLOWER:
The roots of a healthy relationship include: Worthiness, Trust, Confidence, Self-Esteem, Pride/Humility, Accountability, and Modeled Healthy Behavior
The stem or foundation of a healthy relationship is Respect and Equality.
The center of the blooming flower shows the characteristics of a healthy relationship: Honesty, Encouragement, Freedom, Love, Communication, Fairness, Emotional Respect, Mutual Affection, Peace, Negotiation and Kindness.
THE WILTING FLOWER:
The roots of an unhealthy/abusive relationship include: Worthlessness, Insecurity, Learned Behavior, Cultural Acceptance, Patriarchy, Shame, and Fear.
The wilting stem or foundation of an unhealthy relationship is Power and Control.
The center of the wilting flower shows some characteristics of an unhealthy and abusive relationship: Intimidation, Threats, Jealousy, Coercion, Isolation, Verbal Abuse, Put Downs, Financial Control, Sexual Assault, Physical Violence, Emotional Abuse, Dominance, Humiliation.

Why the Color Purple? For domestic abuse survivors and advocates the purple ribbon is a unifying symbol of healing, hope and empowerment. For families and friends of domestic homicide victims, the purple ribbon honors the memory of their loved ones.
